What Is CELPE-BRAS? Everything You Need to Know

CELPE-BRAS is the only Brazilian Portuguese proficiency certificate recognized by the Brazilian government. Whether you plan to study, work, or live in Brazil, understanding this exam is your first step.

What Is CELPE-BRAS?

CELPE-BRAS stands for Certificado de Proficiencia em Lingua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros (Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners). It is developed and administered by INEP (Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anisio Teixeira), a branch of the Brazilian Ministry of Education.

The exam is offered twice a year, typically in April and October, at authorized testing centers in Brazil and in over 30 countries worldwide. It evaluates real-world communication skills rather than isolated grammar knowledge, making it unique among language proficiency tests.

Who Needs CELPE-BRAS?

The certificate is required or highly beneficial for:

  • Foreign students applying to Brazilian universities (undergraduate and graduate programs)
  • Medical professionals who obtained their degree abroad and want to practice in Brazil (revalidation of diplomas)
  • Professionals seeking employment in Brazil who need to prove Portuguese proficiency
  • Foreigners applying for Brazilian permanent residency or naturalization
  • Anyone who wants an internationally recognized proof of their Portuguese skills

Exam Format

The CELPE-BRAS exam consists of two parts, both designed to test integrated communication skills in realistic situations:

Written Part (Parte Escrita)

You complete 4 tasks based on audio, video, and text prompts. Tasks include writing emails, letters, articles, opinion pieces, and summaries. Each task tests your ability to understand a trigger and produce an appropriate written response in the correct genre. Duration: 3 hours.

Oral Part (Parte Oral)

A 20-minute face-to-face interview with an examiner. It starts with a personal conversation and progresses to discussions triggered by images, articles, or other materials. The examiner evaluates fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and your ability to sustain a conversation.

Certification Levels

CELPE-BRAS awards a single certificate with four possible proficiency levels, determined by your combined performance on both parts:

Intermediario

Intermediario Superior

Avancado

Avancado Superior

Why CELPE-BRAS Matters

Unlike other language tests, CELPE-BRAS evaluates how you use Portuguese in real contexts. There are no multiple-choice questions. Every task requires you to read, listen, and produce text or speech, closely mirroring how you would actually use the language in Brazil.

The certificate is recognized by Brazilian universities, employers, and government agencies. For many academic and professional paths in Brazil, it is not optional but a formal requirement. Having a CELPE-BRAS certificate also demonstrates cultural competence, as the exam materials are drawn from authentic Brazilian media and everyday situations.
