Unlike exams that give you a simple percentage or numbered score, CELPE-BRAS uses a holistic evaluation system that assigns one of four certification levels — or no certification at all. How CELPE-BRAS Scoring Works
CELPE-BRAS evaluates two components: the written part (Parte Escrita) and the oral part (Parte Oral). The written part consists of four tasks, each evaluated on criteria including communicative adequacy, genre appropriateness, textual cohesion, and linguistic resources such as grammar and vocabulary. The oral part is a 20-minute face-to-face interview evaluated on similar communicative criteria.
Each component — written and oral — receives a separate level rating. Your final certification level is determined by the lower of the two ratings. This means that if you score Avançado on the written part but Intermediário on the oral part, your certificate will be Intermediário. Both components must reach at least the minimum Intermediário level for you to receive any certification.
The Four Certification Levels
CELPE-BRAS certifies candidates at four levels, each representing a different degree of communicative competence in Brazilian Portuguese:
Intermediário
The candidate communicates in a limited number of everyday situations. They can understand and produce simple texts, respond to basic social interactions, and handle familiar topics. Some misunderstandings may occur, and the candidate may rely on short, simple sentences. This is the minimum certification level and is sufficient for basic university admission requirements and some professional purposes.
Intermediário Superior
The candidate communicates in most everyday situations and some professional contexts. They produce texts with greater variety of genres and more complex sentence structures. They can handle unexpected situations with some difficulty but generally maintain communication. This level is commonly required for graduate programs and many professional licensing processes in Brazil.
Avançado
The candidate communicates fluently in a wide range of situations, including complex professional and academic contexts. They produce well-structured texts in varied genres, use a broad vocabulary, and demonstrate strong grammatical control. Minor errors may occur but do not impede communication. This level satisfies the requirements for most professional revalidation processes, including medicine and law.
Avançado Superior
The candidate demonstrates near-native communicative competence. They produce sophisticated, well-articulated texts across all genres, demonstrate nuanced vocabulary, and handle complex arguments and abstract topics with ease. Errors are rare and inconsequential. This is the highest CELPE-BRAS certification level and is relatively uncommon.
Evaluation Criteria in Detail
For the written part, each of the four tasks is evaluated on multiple criteria. Communicative adequacy — whether you actually accomplished the task as requested — carries the most weight. A well-written text that does not address the task instruction will score poorly regardless of linguistic quality.
Genre appropriateness examines whether your text matches the conventions of the requested format. A formal letter should look and sound like a formal letter, not a casual message. Textual cohesion evaluates how well your ideas connect, including the use of transitional words, paragraph structure, and logical flow.
Linguistic resources encompass grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, and spelling. While errors in grammar alone will not necessarily lower your score significantly, a pattern of basic errors combined with limited vocabulary will impact your level. The evaluators look at the overall quality of communication, not just isolated mistakes.
How the Oral Part Is Scored
The oral interview lasts approximately 20 minutes and is conducted by a trained CELPE-BRAS examiner. The first five minutes focus on introductory conversation about your life, motivations, and background. The remaining time involves discussing topics based on provocative materials — photographs, short texts, headlines, or cartoons — that the examiner presents.
Evaluators assess your spoken communication on criteria similar to the written part: communicative competence, the ability to discuss varied topics, vocabulary range, grammatical control, pronunciation, and conversational fluency. They also evaluate how well you respond to the examiner's prompts, whether you can sustain a conversation, and whether you can develop and defend arguments.
What If You Do Not Receive Certification?
If either your written or oral score falls below the Intermediário threshold, you do not receive any CELPE-BRAS certificate. This is not uncommon — a significant percentage of candidates do not certify on their first attempt. Common reasons include:
- Not addressing task instructions correctly (low communicative adequacy).
- Difficulty sustaining conversation during the oral interview, especially on unfamiliar topics.
- Producing text that does not match the requested genre.
- Running out of time and leaving tasks incomplete.
How to Check Your Results
CELPE-BRAS results are typically released 60 to 90 days after the exam date. Results are published on the INEP website, where you can check your certification level using your registration number (CPF for residents, passport number for international candidates).
If you pass, your physical certificate is sent to the testing center where you took the exam. Processing and delivery can take several additional months. In the meantime, you can use the digital result from the INEP website as provisional proof of certification for most purposes. If you need to request a review of your results, INEP provides an appeals process within a limited window after publication.
Maximizing Your Certification Level
Understanding how CELPE-BRAS scoring works is the first step toward preparing strategically. Focus on communicative adequacy above all — make sure you address exactly what each task asks.
