Overview of the Four Certification Levels

CELPE-BRAS awards four levels of certification: Intermediario, Intermediario Superior, Avancado, and Avancado Superior. Unlike exams that use letter grades or numeric scores, CELPE-BRAS levels describe your actual communicative competence — what you can do with Portuguese in real-world situations. Your final level is determined by the lower of your two scores (written and oral), so you must perform consistently across both parts.

Intermediario Superior: The Professional Threshold

Intermediario Superior represents a significant step up in communicative competence. At this level, you communicate effectively in most everyday and professional situations. You understand texts of moderate complexity, write adequately in various genres, and maintain conversations on a range of topics beyond basic daily life. Errors still occur but rarely interfere with comprehension.

This is the critical level for medical professionals — the Revalida exam for medical diploma revalidation requires at minimum Intermediario Superior. Many university graduate programs also require this level for admission. If you are a healthcare professional or planning to pursue advanced studies in Brazil, this is your minimum target.

Avancado: Professional Fluency

Errors are infrequent and never impede communication.

Candidates at the Avancado level show strong command of Portuguese grammar, a varied and precise vocabulary, and the ability to organize their ideas in well-structured, cohesive texts. In the oral interview, they can develop arguments, express subtle distinctions, and handle unexpected topics with confidence. This level demonstrates professional-grade Portuguese ability.

Avancado Superior: Near-Native Proficiency

Avancado Superior is the highest level of CELPE-BRAS certification and represents near-native communicative competence. Candidates at this level handle complex, abstract, and highly specialized topics with precision and sophistication. Their writing demonstrates excellent genre awareness, nuanced vocabulary, and masterful textual organization. Errors are rare and stylistically insignificant.

Achieving Avancado Superior is uncommon and typically requires years of immersion in Brazilian Portuguese or exceptionally intensive study. It is not required for any specific bureaucratic purpose — no Brazilian program or process demands a level higher than Intermediario Superior. However, it represents a prestigious achievement that signals exceptional linguistic competence to employers, academic institutions, and professional organizations.

How Scoring Works

Understanding the scoring system helps you focus your preparation on what matters most:

• Both parts matter equally: Your final certification level is determined by the lower of your written and oral scores. If you score Avancado on writing but Intermediario on speaking, your certificate will be at the Intermediario level. This means you must prepare both skills to the same standard.
• Four evaluation criteria: Both written and oral parts are assessed on communicative adequacy, genre/discourse configuration, textual cohesion and coherence, and linguistic resources. Communicative adequacy carries the most weight — you must do what the task or interview requires.
• Holistic evaluation: Evaluators do not assign separate scores for each criterion and then average them. Instead, they assess your overall communicative performance holistically, considering how all criteria interact. This means a few grammar mistakes will not hurt you if your text is communicatively adequate and well-organized.
• Multiple evaluators: Each written task is assessed by trained evaluators who follow standardized evaluation guidelines. For borderline cases, additional evaluators may review your work. The oral interview is conducted and evaluated by two examiners simultaneously.

Which Level Do You Need?

Your required level depends on your specific purpose for seeking CELPE-BRAS certification:

• For Brazilian naturalization: Intermediario is the minimum. If you are applying for citizenship through the standard naturalization process, any CELPE-BRAS certification level meets the requirement.
• For Revalida (medical diploma revalidation): Intermediario Superior is the minimum. Medical professionals should aim for this level or higher, as the Revalida exam itself is conducted entirely in Portuguese.
• For university admission (PEC-G and graduate programs): Intermediario is required for PEC-G. Individual graduate programs may require higher levels — check with your target institution for specific requirements.
• For professional advancement: There is no legal minimum for most professions, but Avancado or Avancado Superior demonstrates strong competence to Brazilian employers and clients. Higher levels significantly improve your professional credibility.
