What Is CELPE-BRAS?

CELPE-BRAS (Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros) is the only Portuguese proficiency exam officially recognized by the Brazilian government. Unlike CELPE-BRAS, which uses a single exam with multiple certification levels, CAPLE offers separate exams for each proficiency level aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The CAPLE exams include ACESSO (A2), CIPLE (A2+), DEPLE (B1), DIPLE (B2), DAPLE (C1), and DUPLE (C2). Each exam tests reading comprehension, written production, oral comprehension, oral production, and structural competence. The most fundamental difference is the testing approach. CELPE-BRAS uses an integrated, task-based format where every writing task is connected to a source text, audio, or video. Recognition and Where Each Exam Is Accepted

Where your certificate is accepted depends largely on which country you are targeting:

• Brazil: CELPE-BRAS is required for foreign nationals seeking to validate medical, dental, and other professional diplomas in Brazil. It is also required for naturalization and is accepted by all Brazilian universities for foreign student admission.
• Portugal: CAPLE certificates are widely accepted for university admission, residency applications, and Portuguese citizenship processes. Portugal's immigration system recognizes CAPLE as proof of language proficiency.
• European Union: CAPLE certificates, being CEFR-aligned, are broadly recognized across the EU for immigration, professional, and academic purposes.
• International organizations: Both certificates are recognized by many international institutions. However, if the requirement specifies 'Brazilian Portuguese,' CELPE-BRAS is typically expected. If it specifies 'Portuguese,' either may be accepted.
• Academic programs: Brazilian universities require CELPE-BRAS. Portuguese and some European universities prefer CAPLE. Programs in other countries may accept either.

Cost and Logistics

CELPE-BRAS registration costs vary by country but typically range from $50 to $100 USD. The exam is offered twice a year, usually in April and October, at authorized testing centers called postos aplicadores. Availability outside Brazil can be limited, so candidates should register early.

CAPLE exam fees vary by level, generally ranging from 70 to 180 euros. Exams are offered at authorized centers in Portugal and internationally. Higher-level exams may have fewer available dates. The University of Lisbon provides study materials and sample exams for each level.

Can You Take Both?

Yes, and some people do. If you plan to live, work, or study in Brazil and also have connections to Portugal or other Portuguese-speaking countries, holding both certificates can be advantageous. However, most candidates only need one.
